National Trust - Levant Mine and Beam Engine

In its dramatic clifftop setting on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Levant was, for 110 years, ‘the queen of Cornwall’s submarine mines’, with undersea levels stretching more than a mile out under the sea. Today, as part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage Site, Levant embodies an atmospheric and awe-inspiring landscape that has made the local mining district famous worldwide. The surviving buildings and ruins offer a moving glimpse into the lives and stories of the men and women who toiled to extract the riches of the earth from beneath the crashing waves.
